From IT Guy to University of Hawaii President: David Lassner’s Inspiring Journey

In an era where adaptability and resilience define successful leaders, David Lassner’s journey from an entry-level IT professional to the President of the University of Hawai‘i is nothing short of inspiring. With a career spanning nearly five decades, Lassner exemplifies how passion, curiosity, and commitment can pave the way to extraordinary achievements. In this conversation, Lassner reflected on his path, sharing lessons and pivotal moments that shaped his career and leadership style.

A Journey That Began with Curiosity
David Lassner’s professional journey began unexpectedly. While pursuing a graduate degree in computer science at the University of Illinois in the mid-1970s, Lassner was introduced to the use of computers in teaching and learning—a revolutionary concept at the time. This exposure led to an opportunity to assist the University of Hawai‘i with a pilot project implementing the groundbreaking PLATO system. Lassner, then a 22-year-old grad student, moved to Hawai‘i on a one-year, part-time contract. Little did he know, this temporary role would anchor him in Hawai‘i for the rest of his life.

“I never wanted to be president. I didn’t even know I wanted to stay in Hawai‘i,” Lassner shared. But his engagement with the local culture and his evolving career in technology kept him grounded. Over the years, Lassner held various roles, from programming and project management to leading the university’s information technology initiatives. His ability to adapt to challenges and embrace opportunities enabled him to rise through the ranks.

From Technologist to Leader
Lassner’s contributions to the University of Hawai‘i went far beyond implementing IT systems. He played a significant role in modernizing the university’s technological infrastructure and spearheaded innovative distance learning programs using live video between islands—a precursor to the remote education we see today.

In 2013, after decades of advancing UH’s technology landscape, Lassner was unexpectedly asked to serve as interim president during a transitional period. Though reluctant, he accepted the challenge, believing he could make a difference. A year later, he was officially appointed as the 15th president of the University of Hawai‘i system, becoming one of the few technologists to hold such a role.

His presidency was marked by a commitment to enhancing the university’s academic and financial standing, navigating crises like the COVID-19 pandemic, and addressing complex issues such as the TMT (Thirty Meter Telescope) controversy on Mauna Kea. “TMT was personally difficult,” Lassner admitted, acknowledging the deep divisions within the Hawaiian community. Yet, his empathetic leadership and focus on stewardship helped guide the university through challenging times.

A Leader Shaped by Hawaii’s Culture
Beyond his professional achievements, Lassner’s connection to Hawai‘i’s people and culture is evident. From volunteering with the Sierra Club to preserving native plants, Lassner embraced the islands as his home. He even delved into traditional Hawaiian practices, becoming a dedicated hula student under renowned kumu (teachers).

“Hula taught me discipline and the importance of sharing culture,” Lassner said. His ability to integrate his passions into his leadership reflects his deep respect for Hawai‘i’s heritage and values.

Retirement and Looking Ahead
In 2023, Lassner announced his intention to retire at the end of 2024. Reflecting on his legacy, he emphasized the importance of leaving while still passionate and effective. “I feel really good about what I’ve done,” he said. Retirement for Lassner doesn’t mean stepping away completely. He plans to travel, engage in community service, and continue contributing to IT-related initiatives as a volunteer.

Lessons from Lassner’s Journey
David Lassner’s story is a testament to the power of lifelong learning, adaptability, and cultural integration. From his early days as a shepherd in Israel and a programmer in Illinois to his leadership as UH President, Lassner embraced each phase of his life with curiosity and openness. His journey reminds us that success isn’t linear—it’s about finding purpose in every opportunity and staying true to one’s values.

For aspiring leaders, Lassner offers a valuable lesson: leadership is not about titles but about the impact you create. Whether deploying cutting-edge technology or navigating complex cultural issues, Lassner’s legacy demonstrates how empathy, dedication, and a willingness to grow can lead to remarkable achievements.
